Precise measurement control is important for medical procedures, like image-guided radiotherapy, where the patient must remain exactly in a planned position in order to administer treatment and capture images for diagnosis. It is also critical in the treatment of such conditions as brain metastases, and prostate and spine tumors.
During these treatments, a patient typically lies on a couch, around which a linear accelerator rotates directing a radiation beam at appropriate angles to fully cover the target volume (tumor). The aim and calibration of the radiation beam must be accurate as sometimes there are only millimeters separating healthy tissue and the malignant tissue. With a sub-millimetric margin, even breathing movements of the patient are cause for misalignment. Therefore, the patient's positioning is closely tracked throughout the entire treatment with high precision and in real-time.
